How To Properly Clean A Rhinestone Jewelry

By Rhea Solomon

There are lots of people who like collecting rhinestone jewelry. If this is the case, they should have enough knowledge on how to clean the said accessory. They have to maintain the said accessory if they want to maintain its luster. After all, it is not like rubies and diamonds which have their own natural luster to go by.

To clean the said gemstone, the person should follow a certain method for the cleaning. With this cleaning method, the person can ensure that the said gemstone will obtain the luster that makes it shine once again. The first thing that the person will have to do for this is to lay out paper towels with the aim to cover the workstation.

Get a can of compressed air. Spraying this on the said gemstone will allow the person to remove loose dirt from it. There may be those caked-on dirt so the person will have to get and use a toothpick to loosen it up. It is not recommended to use metal tools like dental pick or needle since these will easily scratch the gemstone's metal settings.

Get a bottle of isopropyl alcohol as well. Most people know this as rubbing alcohol. This alcohol will dry up quickly so it is certainly a valuable cleaning tool to use for this task. If the gemstone retains any moisture, the metal setting will just tarnish and darken. When the gemstone is tarnished, there is no other option but to replace them.

Cotton swabs are very important for this too. With the cotton swabs, the person can easily apply the alcohol into the accessory. Dip the swab in the alcohol. The excess alcohol on the tip should be eliminated by rubbing it into the laid out paper towel. This prevents alcohol puddles from forming around the said gem too.

The said item might have several rhinestones in it. For such cases, clean the item up by going over the stones one by one. There may be times when the stone becomes wet because of the excess alcohol on the swab. If this happens, just dry off the excess moisture on the stone through the other end of the swab.

Most people will focus on the part easily seen by others. While this might be good, do not forget to clean the back part of the said gem too. Turn the gem over to clean the metal finish area. If the cotton swab gets too dirty, then it might be time to change it. Dipping it into alcohol and rubbing off excess moisture should then be followed.

Some gemstones are open-backed. If this is the case, then just make mini-cotton swabs, removing a small amount of the swab's cotton. Get a toothpick, wet it, and then stick it into the middle of the removed cotton. This will be useful in cleaning off the dirt in the crevices of the gemstone.

The mini-cotton swabs are useful for the cleaning of a rhinestone jewelry too. For this, one has to follow the same steps with the cleaning of the entire gemstone. This basically include the wetting of the mini-cotton swabs, to the drying, and to the cleaning of the small spaces.
