Gabrielle Arruda set off from Chicago to New York to study fashion at Parsons The New School of Design to pursue a career as a designer. Her first collection takes inspiration from segments of her experience. As a modern woman herself, her collection attempts to embody femininity and modernity through the movements of fabric.
For her first collection, Gabrielle Arruda wanted to embody both femininity and modernity. She found inspiration for the collection in the powerful energy created by wind. She wanted her collection to personify the movement and power that allows wind to create energy on rural farms. With the concept of wind in mind, her debut collection stands as her emergence into the modern fashion world.
One of the ideals important to Gabrielle Arruda is having a fully functioning line made in the USA. Having the collection made from fabrics in America give her collection a sense of authenticity and craftsmanship without sacrificing the quality of the work and the design.
With wind as a dominant inspiration behind her debut collection, she named it "Energy". To personify the movement and power of wind she used lightweight yet classic fabric to create pieces for her ideal modern customer. The play on silhouettes within the collection gives it a sophisticated yet classic feel without sacrificing the sensual appeal of the garments.
Skirts, shorts, pants, and dresses are a few of the main items to be found in the collection. The varying shapes of necklines and fabrics create a distinct characteristic to not only the garments themselves, but the collection as well. To create a comfortable and sophisticated flow within the garments, fabrics like cotton, linen and silk were used.
The "Energy" collection carries everything from evening dresses and gowns to shorts and pants suits. Since the modern woman is constantly in motion, Arruda used that concept as she approached each garment individually. The fabrics and appeal of the design create a light flow and movement when the garment is worn. A stand out piece found within the collection is a top that features a silk chiffon neck piece that draws you in. The piece is paired with a short short to add to the dramatic effect from the neck piece. Other items in the collection are paired with light jackets, coats and vests to bring the collection together.
Off the runway Gabrielle Arruda has made efforts to support the empowerment of women within the workplace. She has promised a portion of her proceeds from a single garment within her collection will go toward a foundation that empowers women in business. As an effort to raise money for breast cancer research she has also created a logo pin. All proceeds from the logo pin will be matched and donated for breast cancer research.
Up next for designer Gabrielle Arruda is her Fall/Winter 2014 collection that will soon make its debut. As an urban designer, Arruda has made an effort to share her daily inspirations on social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest to keep fashion lovers up to date on her latest trends.
